About the role

The California Department of Insurance is seeking a dynamic Administrative Law Judge to research, interpret, and apply federal and state statutes, regulations, and case law. The role involves conducting quasi‑judicial hearings, preparing decisions, and working in a fast‑paced, hybrid environment.

Key responsibilities

• Preside over hearings involving the Insurance Code, Administrative Procedures Act, and related statutes.
• Interpret and apply statutory and regulatory provisions to complex insurance matters.
• Render proposed decisions and draft final decisions under the supervision of the Supervising Administrative Law Judge.
• Complete required conflict‑of‑interest disclosures (Form 700) and adhere to ethical standards.
• Assist with additional assignments as directed by supervisory staff.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience in legal research and statutory interpretation.
• Ability to conduct hearings, evaluate evidence, and write clear decisions.
• Willingness to work in a hybrid setting with occasional remote work.
