Academy Instructor – Training & Development

About the role

The Training and Development Division of the New York City Department of Correction is seeking certified General Topics Instructors to deliver recruit and in‑service training. You will plan, present, and assess classroom sessions that support the department’s mission of safe custody and successful re‑entry.

Key responsibilities

• Design, update, and deliver curriculum for new‑hire orientation, professional development, and the Basic Course for Correction Officers.
• Conduct in‑class assessments to verify that training objectives are met.
• Collaborate with division leadership to improve use of staff, equipment, and technology.
• Assist in creating and revising lesson plans and training materials.
• Provide guidance on policy compliance with DOC, NYS DCJS, and Municipal Police Training Council standards.

Required profile

• NY State Division of Criminal Justice Services (NYS DCJS) certification as a General Topics Instructor.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, analytical, and problem‑solving abilities.
• Proactive, flexible, and able to build positive relationships across multiple units.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook).
