About the role
The International Rescue Committee is seeking an Academic Lead Teacher to deliver ESOL instruction for middle and high school students in the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA). This six‑week program supports newly arrived refugee youth in New York City public schools.
Key responsibilities
- Participate in mandatory school programming, instructional planning sessions, trainings, and program meetings.
- Plan and lead daily Parent ESOL (PESOL) and Youth ESOL (YESOL) classes for 15‑25 multilingual learners, using culturally responsive, trauma‑informed lesson plans.
- Prepare and submit detailed daily lesson plans, slide decks, and worksheets in advance of instruction.
- Administer formative and summative assessments, including pre‑assessments, to inform curriculum design.
- Collaborate with IRC staff and classroom culture lead teachers to monitor student progress and communicate updates to parents.
- Maintain a positive classroom climate aligned with Academy philosophy and protocols.
- Provide substitute coverage as needed and engage in instructional coaching cycles.
- Supervise 1‑3 interns, generate final report cards, and complete staff surveys.
- Adhere to all IRC policies and perform additional duties as assigned.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in English Education or a related field.
- Candidate for a Master’s degree in a related field and TESOL certification preferred.
