Academic Advisor – FOCUS Program for Probation Students

About the role
The Center for Access and Academic Success at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore seeks a full‑time Academic Advisor for its Future Outstanding Cohort of University Students (FOCUS) program. The advisor will work directly with undergraduate students on academic probation, providing proactive, student‑centered guidance to promote recovery, retention, and timely degree completion.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct one‑on‑one advising sessions with probation students to develop individualized Academic Improvement Plans (AIP).
- Review academic records to identify factors contributing to probation status and recommend appropriate interventions.
- Monitor student progress, adjust plans as needed, and coordinate support services with faculty, tutors, and campus offices.
- Maintain detailed advising documentation and track outcomes in the student information system.
- Provide academic coaching on time management, study skills, and goal setting.
- Facilitate workshops and group advising sessions focused on retention and success strategies.
- Prepare progress reports for the Director of CAAS and other stakeholders.
- Support data collection and assessment activities related to student retention initiatives.
Required profile
- Demonstrated experience working with college‑level students and supporting academic success.
- Proven ability to develop, coordinate, and evaluate student academic programs.
- Strong initiative, problem‑solving skills, and attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative team orientation.
