1st Class Mechanic – Catalyst Team

About the role

We are seeking a 1st Class Mechanic to join BASF’s Catalyst division in McIntyre, GA. The role involves maintaining and repairing complex equipment used in catalyst production, ensuring safe and efficient operations.

Key responsibilities

• Install, align, dismantle, repair, and re‑assemble complex rotating equipment.
• Diagnose equipment failures and perform mechanical‑skill work such as fabrication, assembly, welding, burning, cutting, and pipefitting.
• Use a variety of welding and cutting methods including oxy‑acetylene, plasma arc, shielded arc, tungsten arc, flux‑cored, carbon arc, and submerged arc.
• Rig equipment for lifting with hoists or cranes, handling loads of several thousand pounds.
• Inspect work for quality and dimensional compliance, and clean debris and lubricants from parts and work areas.
• Repair piping and valves, install new pipe, valves, and control devices for equipment modifications.
• Complete routine paperwork and access CMMS information using basic computer skills.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Prior experience with rotating equipment or similar manufacturing environment.
• Ability to operate shop equipment, work on ladders, scaffolds, and in pits.
• Capability to manually lift 50 lb intermittently and use mechanical aids for heavier loads.

Required skills

• Welding (oxy‑acetylene, plasma arc, shielded arc, tungsten arc, flux‑cored, carbon arc, submerged arc).
• Cutting and gouging techniques.
• Pipefitting and rigging.
• Fabrication and assembly of mechanical components.
• Use of mechanic’s tools, inspection gauges, and shop mathematics.
• CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) operation.
• Reading and interpreting technical drawings, sketches, and manuals.
