Utility Shift Operator B – Water Treatment & Power Plant

About the role

The Utility Shift Operator B works on scheduled shifts to monitor and adjust water‑treatment equipment, turbine generators, boiler auxiliaries and high‑pressure steam systems. This is a union‑represented position that supports safe, continuous plant operation.

Key responsibilities

• Rove the plant monitoring water‑treatment units (lime‑soda ash softeners, zeolite softeners, anthracite filters) and adjust chemical feeders.
• Collect and analyze water samples for pH, conductivity, hardness, phosphate, sulfite, sulfate, chloride and biocide levels; adjust feeds to maintain target parameters.
• Operate, clean and maintain filter presses, ion exchangers, pumps, and auxiliary equipment.
• Maintain operating logs, change charts, filters, and lubricate equipment according to schedule.
• Assist the Master Operator and Shift Coordinator in boiler, generator and auxiliary start‑up or shutdown.
• Perform minor preventative maintenance and respond to abnormal conditions.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• Working knowledge of water‑chemistry wet tests on lime and soda‑ash softeners.
• Ability to follow detailed operating procedures and record‑keeping requirements.

Required skills

• Water chemistry testing (pH, conductivity, hardness, phosphate, sulfite, sulfate, chloride).
• Operation of chemical feeders and ion‑exchange regeneration.
• Filter press operation and maintenance.
• Laboratory equipment calibration and volumetric analysis.
• Boiler and turbine generator monitoring.
• Preventative maintenance of steam‑system components.
