Trial Attorney – Criminal Prosecutor

About the role

The Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Las Cruces, New Mexico is seeking a dedicated Trial Attorney to prosecute felony cases and contribute to public safety. This full‑time, at‑will position offers the chance to develop extensive courtroom experience while serving the community.

Key responsibilities

• Manage criminal cases from charging review through trial or resolution, including property crimes, armed robbery, drug trafficking, and juvenile offenses.
• Conduct legal research, draft motions, and present evidence in court.
• Collaborate with law enforcement, investigators, victim advocates, and other criminal‑justice partners.
• Assist trial teams, mentor less‑experienced attorneys, and participate in crime‑scene response, community outreach, boards, and task forces.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and an active New Mexico law license.
• At least two years of experience as a practicing attorney or one year as a prosecuting attorney.
• Demonstrated courtroom advocacy, strong legal research and writing abilities, and sound prosecutorial judgment.
• Ability to manage an independent caseload, communicate effectively, and uphold ethical standards of public service.
