Transitional Guide – Student Success Advisor

About the role

The Transitional Guide provides onboarding and student‑success support to first‑year undergraduate students at the University of Miami. Reporting to the Associate/Assistant Director of Student Success & Transitions, the role helps students navigate academic policies, registration, and campus resources to improve first‑year retention.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as the primary contact for assigned students from deposit through onboarding, preparing their records for hand‑off to Cane Navigators.
• Guide students through major changes that involve multiple schools/colleges.
• Introduce and explain academic policies, the University Bulletin, Academic Calendar, CaneLink, Navigate, and registration deadlines.
• Collaborate with senior guides, academic advisors, admissions, financial aid, veteran services, international student services, housing, orientation, and other campus partners.
• Monitor student progress, support first‑semester course registration, and ensure service satisfaction.
• Facilitate registration permissions, course equivalency reviews, and prerequisite checks as needed.
• Use analytical dashboards and EAB Navigate to manage communications, maintain accurate records, and document interactions.
• Achieve unit benchmarks, customer‑service standards, and productivity metrics while adhering to FERPA guidelines.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Minimum of 1 year experience in advising, counseling, or customer service preferred.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
• Ability to build relationships across campus and provide compassionate support to students and families.
• Detail‑oriented, able to stay focused in a fast‑paced environment and handle stressful situations professionally.

Required skills

• Experience with EAB Navigate student‑success platform.
• Familiarity with CaneLink student information system.
• Use of Navigate (student success system) and related analytical dashboards.
