Tech Reporter

About the role

Tencent is hiring a Tech Reporter based in Palo Alto, California. The role covers real-time industry news, in-depth research and investigative journalism, and on-camera reporting, with a regular physical presence at major tech campuses, AI startups, incubators and university research labs across the Bay Area.

Key responsibilities

• Track, verify and report on real-time industry developments such as product releases, earnings, regulatory shifts and industry summits, writing fast and accurate news briefs under tight deadlines.
• Produce long-form features, market breakdowns and investigative pieces on AI, semiconductor supply chains, venture capital trends and frontier technology.
• Cultivate a network of confidential sources (founders, AI scientists, product managers, engineers, VCs) and conduct independent interviews with C-suite executives, researchers and investors across North America.
• Deliver video standups, field reports and rapid video debriefs from tech campuses, conferences and breaking news events, adapting text reporting into video, podcast and social media formats with multimedia producers.
• Maintain a regular physical presence at major tech campuses, AI startups, incubators and university research labs in the Bay Area.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional experience as a tech reporter, business journalist or media correspondent, preferably covering Silicon Valley, AI or enterprise tech.
• Strong foundational understanding of AI, machine learning, semiconductor ecosystems and venture capital.
• Comfortable on camera for field reporting, video commentary and live event coverage (reel or portfolio required).
• Thrives in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail and sound editorial judgment under pressure.
• Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Computer Science, Economics or a related field; experience with video editing, digital publishing platforms and social-first video formats (X/Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube Shorts); professional fluency in English and Mandarin.

What we offer

• Expected base pay of $80,168 to $139,900 per year, depending on knowledge, skills and experience.
• Possible sign-on payment, relocation package and restricted stock units, evaluated case by case.

• Up to 15 to 25 days of vacation per year, up to 13 days of holidays and up to 10 days of paid sick leave per year, subject to tenure and pro-rating for new hires.
