Staff Site Reliability Engineer – Safeguards ML Infrastructure

About the role

The Safeguards ML Infra team builds and operates the production infrastructure that powers Claude's safety systems. As a Staff Site Reliability Engineer you will own the configuration, deployment, and verification of safeguards for every model launch and ensure they run reliably across multiple cloud platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Act as launch captain: stand up, configure, and verify safeguards for each new model release and serve as the point of contact during launch windows.
• Own off‑cycle deployment of new safety classifiers, including canary rollouts, post‑deployment validation, and discrepancy investigation.
• Verify that the correct safeguards are live on all deployment platforms (1P, AWS Bedrock, GCP Vertex) and eliminate configuration drift.
• Automate launch runbooks into tooling, turn hand‑built checks into continuous validation, and create repeatable deployment pipelines.
• Maintain a safeguards registry with full provenance and participate in on‑call rotations for incidents and time‑sensitive launches.

Required profile

• Extensive experience owning production change management at scale, including deploy pipelines, configuration management, and canary analysis.
• Proven track record of high‑stakes releases as a launch captain, incident commander, or release owner for critical systems.
• Hands‑on experience with on‑call duties, incident response, and turning post‑mortem actions into process improvements.
• Ability to close gaps in processes, building automation where none exists.
• Experience deploying and operating on cloud platforms such as AWS and GCP.
