Staff Mechanical Design Engineer (Sequencing Instrument Platform)

About the role

Illumina's R&D department is looking for a Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to help develop new, industry-leading genetic analysis platforms for life sciences and clinical markets. The engineer designs DNA sequencing equipment that combines optical, mechanical, electrical, chemical and software subsystems, coordinates cross-functional teams and drives innovation.

Key responsibilities

• Translate product requirements into subsystem specifications and design precision electro-mechanical and fluidic mechanisms.
• Work in concurrent, cross-functional teams and gather input from stakeholders across disciplines.
• Manage outsourced design and manufacturing relationships and compare design options by performance and cost.
• Perform mechanical and thermal analysis, create schedules, run risk analysis, develop test plans and verify subsystems and systems.
• Support transfer of new products into manufacturing, track manufacturing and field issues and propose new architectures and technologies.

Required profile

• BS/MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Physics or a related field, with more than 8 years of industry experience.
• Proven track record designing robust electro-mechanical systems such as imaging, dynamic motion control, fluidics and thermal control.
• Experience in product development, transfer to manufacturing and documentation.
• Strong project management and interpersonal skills; fluency in SolidWorks CAD and one or more mechanical FEA packages.
• Willingness to travel to the US for work purposes; the role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Required skills

• Mechanical design principles: form, fit, tolerance stack analysis, GD&T, drafting standards, FEA, design for assembly and manufacturing.
• Knowledge of low, medium and high volume manufacturing processes.
• Selection of electromechanical components such as motors, power transmission parts and sensors.
• Evaluation and optimization of complex tolerance budgets.
