Staff Auditor – City Government

About the role

The Audit Bureau of the New York City Comptroller’s Office seeks a Staff Auditor to join a small, collaborative team. You will support performance audits of city agencies, programs, and contractors, helping to improve efficiency, effectiveness, equity, and fiscal outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct research to set audit objectives and develop audit plans.
• Gain a thorough understanding of auditee operations through walk‑through meetings, interviews, and review of policies and procedures.
• Critically assess documentation and data to identify risks, non‑compliance, and inefficiencies.
• Collect evidence via document review, data analysis, physical observation, and surveys.
• Document audit steps and conclusions in memos, spreadsheets, and other written materials.
• Perform related work as directed by the Audit Supervisor or Lead Auditor.

Required profile

• Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with at least 24 semester credits in auditing, accounting, finance, economics, statistics, law, research methodology, mathematics, data science, management, public or business administration, computer science, or a related field.
• Minimum of one year of full‑time satisfactory experience in performance auditing.
• Ability to work collaboratively in small teams under supervision.
