Staff Attorney – Jackson, MI

About the role

Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM) is hiring a Staff Attorney for its Jackson, Michigan office. The attorney will serve clients in Jackson and Hillsdale counties, primarily assisting those facing eviction and providing support with public benefits. The position is hybrid, requiring regular in‑person work in Jackson.

Key responsibilities

• Represent low‑income clients in eviction cases, both in‑person and virtually.
• Provide legal assistance related to public benefits and other civil matters.
• Conduct client interviews, intake, and counseling for individuals in crisis.
• Prepare and file legal documents, conduct legal research, and manage case files.
• Collaborate with LSSCM staff and community partners to promote homelessness prevention and economic stability.

Required profile

• Active license to practice law in Michigan.
• Strong communication skills, especially with clients in crisis or unfamiliar with the legal system.
• Analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Demonstrated commitment to serving low‑income and underserved populations.
• Legal aid or courtroom experience is a plus.
