Software Engineer II - Backend

About the role

Uber Eats is expanding its Merchant Intelligence team to improve how merchants are represented and categorized on the platform. As a Software Engineer II – Backend, you will focus on building and productionizing machine‑learning solutions that enhance merchant data quality at a global scale.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy state‑of‑the‑art ML models for merchant data reconciliation, entity resolution, and quality improvement.
• Architect end‑to‑end large‑scale ML pipelines that ingest and process complex merchant datasets for downstream products such as Home Feed, Ads, and Sales Outreach.
• Engineer robust merchant embeddings and feature sets to boost precision of sales outreach and onboarding efficiency.
• Improve the ML serving infrastructure, data foundations, and monitoring for merchant intelligence.
• Collaborate with product, backend, and platform teams to translate business needs into scalable ML solutions.
• Iterate quickly, shipping incremental improvements with measurable impact on user experience and business growth.

Required profile

• PhD or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.
• Minimum 4 years of industry experience focused on machine learning and recommendation systems.
• Proven track record of building and productionizing large‑scale ML systems.

Required skills

• Strong programming in Python, Java, or Go.
• Experience with ML frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Familiarity with big‑data tools like Spark, Hive, Kafka, or Cassandra.
• Knowledge of advanced ML techniques (NLP, graph learning, entity resolution).
• Systems design and scalability expertise.
