Software Engineer I

About the role

Robert Half is hiring a Software Engineer I in San Ramon to help design, develop and support applications that power its clients' business operations, from finance and HR systems to modern web platforms. The role sits in an engineering team that integrates Generative AI and intelligent automation into its development practices.

Key responsibilities

• Analyze and resolve basic production issues following department guidelines and troubleshooting practices.
• Provide Level I development and application support.
• Develop individual modules or components in a larger system architecture, and modify or enhance small-scale components under the guidance of a supervisor or senior engineer.
• Plan and run unit tests for your own code and perform integration testing within project scope.
• Design individual modules or components of limited scope in larger system designs.
• Collaborate on AI-assisted development tasks, using Generative AI tools to improve coding efficiency, generate test cases or assist in documentation.
• Support small-scale proof-of-concept projects involving GenAI APIs, prompt engineering or AI-driven automation, and take part in continuous learning on AI technologies such as model APIs, embeddings and responsible AI use.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field, or 2+ years' equivalent experience in a related field within a medium-to-large IT organization.
• No previous professional experience required.
• 1+ years of experience with a programming or scripting language (C#, Java, JavaScript, SQL).
• 1+ years of experience writing or modifying programs for small to mid-size applications, and 1+ years administering and/or configuring an application.
• Ability to communicate with customers, explain technical information to non-technical users, describe business processes to technical resources, draw simple flowcharts, gather requirements and create test plans.

Required skills

• Certifications: Microsoft Tech, PeopleSoft Tech, Java Tech, OpenSource Tech.
• Basic knowledge of SDLC, n-tiered architecture and database concepts.
• Exposure to Microsoft, Open Source and Java containers.
• Familiarity with cloud-based AI services (Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex AI) and RESTful API integration with LLMs preferred.
• Foundational understanding of Generative AI and awareness of ethical AI practices.

• Annual salary range of $68,000 to $102,000, negotiable depending on experience and location.
