Senior Researcher/Engineer, Acoustics

About the role

The Navy Research Laboratory's Acoustics Division conducts basic and applied research on acoustic signal generation, propagation, scatter and detection, working with scientists from academic, private and governmental institutions. The Senior Researcher/Engineer helps build and maintain experimental equipment and supports the branch's research, with an 8-hour on-site schedule during peak hours, travel and possible sea tests. The position may lead to a system engineer or project engineer role.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in designing, building and maintaining experimental equipment, apparatus and components, including system design, software programming, hardware design and configuration, and signal processing.
• Work in a team environment and help with field tests.
• Travel to locations where experiments are carried out outside NRL.

Required profile

• BS degree or higher in physics, engineering or a similar technical or scientific field, with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
• 5-10 years of experience; advanced degrees are a plus.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance and access to the NRL facility; must be a US citizen.
• Hands-on, software and math/physics skills; laboratory experience and familiarity with data acquisition systems and/or robotics.
• Flexibility to move between tasks, organize multiple tasks, work in an office and lab, and work a 40-hour week with occasional overtime.
• Experience with autonomous underwater vehicles and familiarity with ADM/Xilinx tools (VIVADO, Vitis) or FPGA/MPSoC programming is a plus.

Required skills

• Programming or willingness to learn MATLAB, C, C++ and/or HDLs.
• Signal processing and data acquisition.
• Preferred: FPGA/MPSoC programming and knowledge of ADM/Xilinx products.
