About the role
The University of Miami’s Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) is seeking a full‑time Senior Research Associate I to join its Ocean Carbon Cycle group. Based at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory in Miami, the role supports ocean carbon and climate research through fieldwork, laboratory analyses, and data management.
Key responsibilities
- Oversee laboratory activities for the ocean biogeochemistry team.
- Operate and maintain state‑of‑the‑art instrumentation for measuring carbonate parameters in the lab and on research cruises (25‑60 days at sea).
- Install, troubleshoot, calibrate, and upgrade chemical and oceanographic equipment both on‑site and in the field.
- Process and quality‑control biogeochemical data, generate internal reports, and submit datasets and metadata to national and international repositories.
Required profile
- Master’s degree (M.S.) or equivalent professional experience in oceanography, marine science, chemistry, engineering, physics or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience with oceanographic or automated chemical analytical equipment.
- Meticulous attention to data integrity and adherence to quality‑assurance protocols.
- Willingness and ability to participate in extended research cruises and field trips.
- Strong organizational, problem‑solving and teamwork skills.
Required skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, NetCDF or Ocean DataView.
- Basic knowledge of mechanics, computer interfacing and electronics for instrument maintenance.
