Senior R&D Technical Project Manager

About the role

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Senior R&D Technical Project Manager to lead the development of next‑generation high‑temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet systems. The role will oversee projects from concept through prototype and production ramp‑up within a fast‑paced, mission‑driven environment.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of small to mid‑sized R&D projects, providing guidance on best‑practice project management.
• Serve as the primary technical liaison with the executive team, internal engineering groups, and external partners.
• Balance technical trade‑offs such as scalability, design for manufacturability, material selection, coating technologies, and tolerancing.
• Ensure projects are staffed with the appropriate skill mix to meet commitments.
• Develop and maintain comprehensive project plans outlining scope, goals, deliverables, resources, and timelines.
• Lead cross‑functional matrix teams of engineers, designers, analysts, procurement specialists, and other stakeholders.
• Foster a collaborative, high‑performance team culture to drive execution.
• Monitor timelines, identify potential delays, and implement mitigation strategies.
• Lead active risk management throughout the project lifecycle, reporting status to stakeholders.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Science, Engineering or related field, with PMP or equivalent certification.
• 10+ years of technical experience, including at least 5 years as a project manager leading new product integration.
• Proven experience in scope definition, schedule and budget management, risk mitigation, and stakeholder communication.
• Demonstrated ability to act as a technical liaison with executives, engineering teams, and external suppliers.
• Strong problem‑solving skills and capability to mobilize multidisciplinary teams.
• Excellent communication skills for audiences with varying technical expertise.
