Senior Power Electronics Engineer - VFDs

About the role

ABB is hiring a Senior Power Electronics Engineer focused on Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) in New Berlin, Wisconsin. The role reports to the Design and Reliability Manager and supports the Motion Drive Products Division. It is an on-site position centered on hands-on failure analysis to improve product quality and reliability, working with an interdisciplinary team of engineers and cross-functional partners.

Key responsibilities

• Provide root cause analysis for factory and field failures of low-voltage (120V-600V) VFDs
• Document investigations and root cause categorizations thoroughly in a database
• Use lab instrumentation to investigate failure causes and recommend corrective actions
• Operate, select and maintain laboratory electrical and scientific instruments
• Analyze data to spot trends that improve product reliability

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
• 5+ years of experience in reliability engineering, failure analysis or a related role in the power electronics industry
• Valid US driver's license and US passport, as the role involves domestic and international travel
• Work authorization to work for ABB in the US

Required skills

• Troubleshooting and root cause analysis techniques such as FMEA, DFMA, 5 Whys, RRCA, 8-D, fault trees and affinity diagrams
• Communication, database, documentation and cross-functional collaboration skills
• Preferred: digital, analog, FPGA, microprocessor, VFD and AC motor drive background
