Senior ML Engineer (Energy & Utilities)

About the role

AZX is looking for a Senior ML Engineer to build AI models and the underlying tools that power our work with utility clients. You will create reusable capabilities that are used across many engagements and join specific projects when field data requires adaptation.

Key responsibilities

• Own reusable ML libraries for forecasting, disaggregation, demand response, detection, and asset health, each with evaluation harnesses and documentation.
• Develop and maintain a fast building‑energy simulation engine (Rust crates with Python bindings) and validate its performance against reference oracles.
• Build grid‑data toolkits, including protocol codecs, synthetic scenario generators, and verification utilities.
• Provide planning and dispatch support for demand‑response programs, ensuring accurate cost‑impact decisions.
• Manage versioned publishing of crates and Python packages with attached evaluation evidence.

Required profile

• 5+ years of shipping applied ML on real‑world signals such as forecasting, disaggregation, or detection.
• Strong numerical and scientific computing skills, including feature engineering from raw interval data.
• Experience with Python (3.12+) and a systems language (Rust) or willingness to learn.
• Ability to perform end‑to‑end data engineering, from data acquisition to profiling.
• Bachelor’s degree (Master’s a plus) and willingness to quickly learn energy‑domain terminology.

• Python (numpy, pandas/polars, scikit‑learn, statsmodels)
• Time‑series feature engineering and forecasting libraries (sktime, statsforecast)
• SQL, PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB
• Rust (or comparable systems language) via PyO3/maturin
• CI/CD for scientific software
