Senior Backend Engineer – CRM (Remote, USA Only)

About the role

The CRM team owns everything that Close’s customers interact with daily – leads, contacts, opportunities, tasks, activities, custom objects, and search. The team is currently redesigning the core data model to make the platform more flexible for fast‑growing businesses, while also embedding AI‑native features throughout the product.

Key responsibilities

• Rearchitect the core CRM data model, redefining relationships between leads, contacts, opportunities, and custom objects.
• Build APIs and tools that enable agents to efficiently access and manipulate CRM data, with a strong focus on search capabilities.
• Ship AI‑native CRM features such as agentic enrichment, AI‑powered data cleaning, and advanced search.
• Maintain and optimize hot paths to ensure ultra‑fast performance for common sales workflows.

Required profile

• Seasoned engineer with a strong track record of designing and delivering large‑scale systems.
• Architecturally minded, having led migrations or re‑architectures without downtime.
• Passionate about data modeling, schemas, normalization, and query design.
• Experience with search technologies, especially Elasticsearch.
• Hands‑on experience shipping production AI/LLM‑backed features.
• Comfortable using AI tools in daily development workflow.
• Battle‑tested in incident response and owning critical customer‑impact systems.
• Builder first mentality – prefers shipping functional versions quickly over over‑engineering.
