Scientific Editor – Materials Science Journal

About the role

We are looking for a Scientific Editor to join the Matter team, the flagship materials‑science title of Cell Press. Reporting to the Editor‑in‑Chief, you will help shape the journal’s scientific direction, grow its community, and act as an ambassador for materials‑science research across the broader Cell Press portfolio.

Key responsibilities

• Evaluate submitted manuscripts for scientific quality and broader significance.
• Develop a cohesive, forward‑looking journal strategy that reflects Matter’s scope.
• Coordinate at least one special issue per year in collaboration with the editorial team.
• Leverage and expand a network of leading researchers to attract high‑impact submissions.
• Identify outstanding materials‑science papers suitable for transfer or commissioning to other Cell Press journals.
• Travel to conferences and research institutes to build community, spot emerging science, and promote the journal.
• Collaborate with sales, marketing, and production teams to meet growth targets.
• Foster productive relationships with other editorial teams across the Cell Press portfolio.

Required profile

• PhD in materials science or a closely related field (e.g., physical chemistry, condensed‑matter physics).
• Strong conceptual and critical thinking across a broad range of scientific topics.
• Established networks within materials‑research communities and ability to engage researchers at all career stages worldwide.
• Excellent communication and editorial judgment.
• Early‑career researchers with a strong publication record are also considered.
