Scientific Editor

About the role

Matter, the flagship materials‑science journal of Cell Press, is looking for a Scientific Editor to help shape its scientific direction and grow its community. Reporting to the Editor‑in‑Chief, you will work closely with the editorial team to ensure high‑impact content and to identify manuscripts for the broader Cell Press portfolio.

Key responsibilities

• Evaluate submissions for scientific quality and broader significance.
• Develop and maintain a forward‑looking journal scope that reflects the full breadth of materials science.
• Coordinate at least one special issue per year in collaboration with the editorial team.
• Leverage a network of leading researchers to attract influential submissions.
• Identify outstanding manuscripts for transfer or commissioning across Cell Press titles.
• Travel to conferences and research institutes to build community and promote the journal.
• Collaborate with sales, marketing, and production teams to meet growth targets.
• Foster productive relationships with other editorial teams within the Cell Press portfolio.

Required profile

• PhD in materials science or a closely related field (e.g., physical chemistry, condensed‑matter physics).
• Strong research background with a demonstrated ability to think conceptually across a broad range of scientific topics.
• Established networks within materials‑research communities and ability to engage researchers at all career stages internationally.
• Exceptional communication and editorial judgment.

Required skills

• Experience with emerging AI tools (optional).
