Safety & Security Counsel

About the role

Anthropic is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as Safety & Security Counsel. In this role you will shape legal frameworks that keep Claude and the company’s AI systems safe, secure, and compliant with emerging regulations. You will work at the intersection of law, policy, and technology to address novel challenges in AI safety and security.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with Safeguards and policy teams to design and iterate usage policies across harm areas such as CBRNE, cyber threats, user wellbeing, and influence operations.
• Advise on policy enforcement frameworks, including account actions, appeals processes, and enforcement thresholds.
• Provide counsel on sensitive escalations involving governments, law enforcement, regulators, and the press.
• Guide threat‑intelligence investigations, bug‑bounty and red‑team programs, and internal/external safety testing.
• Support engineering, ML, and data‑science teams in building detection tools, addressing data‑governance and privacy considerations.
• Act as first‑line legal contact during safety or security incidents, offering real‑time guidance and assessing reporting obligations.
• Develop crisis‑management playbooks, escalation protocols, and self‑serve legal guidance to scale resources.
• Monitor policy and regulatory developments affecting AI safety and security.

Required profile

• Licensed attorney with several years of experience in technology or security law.
• Demonstrated ability to navigate interdisciplinary, high‑stakes legal issues.
• Strong analytical skills and capacity to build novel legal frameworks.
• Excellent judgment in crisis situations and stakeholder communications.

Required skills

• Knowledge of AI safety and security policy frameworks.
• Experience conducting threat‑intelligence investigations and managing bug‑bounty or red‑team programs.
• Understanding of data‑governance, privacy regulations, and related compliance requirements.
