Roll Shop Operator

About the role

The Roll Shop Operator works on mill stands to install, align, and maintain rolls and guides according to shop standards, drawings, and specifications. The role supports production continuity and equipment reliability in a high‑temperature, rotating‑shift environment.

Key responsibilities

• Read blueprints and manuals to obtain roll specifications and support inspection of assembled rolls.
• Rebuild old guides and rolls, removing slag with scrapers, pry bars, torches, or hammers.
• Disassemble and install mill stands, aligning new rolls using wrenches, bars, and hand/pneumatic tools.
• Operate the offline setup verification system and perform equipment changes such as rolls, chocks, lubrication systems, water sprays, and guides.
• Assist with cobble removal, consumable inventory replenishment, and routine equipment care and cleaning.
• Operate overhead cranes to move product or materials and follow all PPE and safety requirements.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• 6 months to 2 years of experience in a roll shop or similar production environment (preferred).
• Ability to perform physical tasks including climbing, lifting up to 50 lb, and working in extreme temperatures up to 160 °F.
• Willingness to work rotating shifts, including days, nights, and weekends.

Required skills

• Reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings.
• Use of precision measuring instruments and gauges.
• Operation of hand and pneumatic tools for assembly and maintenance.
• Overhead crane operation.
• Basic computer and general math skills.
