Research Technician I – Field Ecology (Temporary)

About the role
The Research Technician I provides entry‑level, semi‑skilled support for the Spatial and Population Ecology of Carnivores (SPEC) Lab at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute. The position is seasonal (January‑April 2027), field‑based, and involves working with private landowners and federal lands in South Texas.
Key responsibilities
- Operate and monitor box traps for bobcats, including setting, checking, scouting, and relocating traps.
- Participate in chemical immobilizations and post‑capture work‑ups of bobcats from December through April.
- Respond to mortality events and collar‑drop incidents, and track collared felids using telemetry.
- Collect, label, and organize scat and other biological samples.
- Set up, maintain, and classify images from remote camera traps.
- Provide coverage at other study sites to ensure all technicians receive time off.
Required profile
- High school diploma or equivalent; two years of related experience.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license.
- Physical ability to lift heavy objects, hike several miles over uneven, thorny terrain, and work in >90 °C heat.
- Capability to work independently on private and federal lands.
- Security‑sensitive position requiring export‑control authorization.
