About the role
Texas A&M University’s Anthropology Department is seeking a Research Assistant to support the Principal Investigator and conservation team in stabilizing and preserving the Revolutionary War gunboat Philadelphia. The position is grant‑funded, based in Washington, D.C., and expected to run until March 2027.
Key responsibilities
- Assist with conservation, repair, and stabilization of wooden and iron artifacts.
- Document conservation activities to industry standards and communicate findings to visitors and the public.
- Train and supervise volunteer assistants and help prepare the worksite for public visits.
- Perform photographic documentation, including DSLR and UV‑reflective imaging.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
- Physical ability to lift and move objects up to 50 lb.
- Class C motor vehicle license and willingness to drive to the site or pick up supplies.
- At least six months experience with maritime archaeological artifacts (wood, iron, composites).
Required skills
- DSLR artifact photography and UV‑reflective photography.
- Proficiency with Rhino 7 CAD software.
- Basic knowledge of XRF and FTIR analytical methods.
- Ability to document artifacts to industry standards.
