Regional Expert

About the role

The Regional Expert will join the United Nations Panel of Experts established under Security Council resolution 2140 (2014). Based at the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs in New York, the position is home‑based with regular travel to the field and to UN headquarters. The contract runs from 16 December 2026 to 15 December 2027, subject to renewal and funding.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and investigate alleged violations of the Yemen‑related sanctions regime, including analysis of Arabic‑language media and social media.
• Contribute to the preparation of the Panel’s mid‑term update and final report to the Security Council, as well as periodic briefings for the Committee.
• Collaborate with the Armed Groups Expert and other Panel members to ensure integrated analysis across investigations.
• Participate in investigative missions, bilateral consultations and country visits to gather information from governments, civil society and UN field presences.
• Compile, classify and archive information on individuals and entities suspected of sanctions violations.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant field such as political science, international relations or security studies.
• Demonstrated knowledge of sanctions regimes, especially the UN sanctions on Yemen, and experience working in a UN, regional organization or Member State context.
• Strong analytical and research capacity, with the ability to produce evidence‑based case studies and concise reports.
• Willingness to travel extensively, including to difficult environments, and to work independently under political pressure.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications: Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
• Experience using database software for organizing and analysing investigation data.
• Familiarity with photograph‑management and mapping tools to support field documentation.
