About the role
A.I.S., Inc. is seeking qualified Protected Species Observers (PSOs) for a short‑term project supporting pile‑removal operations in Shirley, NY. The role involves monitoring marine wildlife during daylight hours, recording sightings, and implementing mitigation measures as required.
Key responsibilities
- Visually identify marine mammals and other protected species using the naked eye and optical equipment.
- Maintain continuous observation for up to 10 hours per day, documenting behavior and sightings on organized logs.
- Operate and care for field equipment such as Garmin GPS, binoculars with reticles, range finders, and high‑resolution digital cameras.
- Perform personal QA/QC checks on collected data.
- Participate in daily toolbox, HSE, and project meetings.
Required profile
- Current STCW Basic Safety Training, GWO or BOSIET certification.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification.
- Four‑year degree in biological or geophysical sciences.
- Physician‑certified fit for sea duty (no chronic motion sickness, able to lift 30 lb, tolerate confined quarters and stress).
- Completed approved PSO course with certificate and NMFS‑approved PSO letter.
- Valid Real ID and proof of U.S. work eligibility.
Required skills
- Proficiency with Garmin GPS navigation.
- Use of binoculars with reticles for marine observation.
- Operation of range finders.
- High‑resolution digital photography and video capture.
What we offer
- Hourly compensation (rate to be negotiated).
- Full‑time schedule with 8‑12 hours per day for 2‑3 weeks starting late September 2026.
- Eligibility for AIS benefits after 30 days, including health, dental, vacation, sick and holiday coverage.
