Professor of the Practice & Director of Engineering Design Program

About the role

The position reports to the Dean of Engineering and works closely with the Dean of the Oakland campus to launch and lead the BS in Engineering Design program. It is a founding leadership role responsible for building a first‑of‑its‑kind undergraduate program that produces AI‑fluent, human‑centered, interdisciplinary engineers ready for industry.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute strategic plans for the program, overseeing curriculum that integrates AI, human‑centered design, and project‑based learning.
• Establish and manage a portfolio of industry partnerships, including project sponsorships, co‑development of curriculum, and talent‑pipeline arrangements.
• Lead interdisciplinary teams across faculty, administration, and external partners to deliver co‑op placements, industry‑sponsored capstone projects, and experiential learning opportunities.
• Manage program finances within a self‑supporting model, driving revenue‑generating collaborations.

Required profile

• PhD in engineering or a closely related field.
• Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in academic program leadership, industry partnership management, or workforce development.
• Proven track record of designing, launching, or significantly reforming engineering education programs, especially with experiential or AI‑integrated models.
• Experience in co‑op‑based or experiential learning environments and familiarity with accreditation standards such as ABET.

Required skills

• Deep knowledge of AI tools, including machine learning, simulation, and data analysis, applied to engineering practice and education.
• Experience with learning management systems, co‑op/experiential learning platforms, and CRM systems.
• Understanding of multidisciplinary engineering domains (mechanical, thermal, electrical, data systems) sufficient to lead a cross‑disciplinary program.
• Budget management and financial acumen for self‑supporting program models.
