Principal Product Designer

About the role

Ethos, a life insurance technology company, is looking for a seasoned designer with leadership experience to help build the next generation of products. This is a player-coach role focused on craft at scale: you will own some projects while directing the work of other designers, and help set the bar for quality and impact across a team working across many products and experiences.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design strategy across multiple business units, covering all aspects of design craft
• Help set the vision for the overall user experience
• Direct and guide the work of other designers
• Build new products and iterate on existing ones
• Manage executive stakeholders across engineering, product, marketing and more
• Drive improvements to the product development process with cross-functional partners

Required profile

• At least 10 years of product design experience
• At least 2 years at a venture-funded, private startup
• At least 2 years in a role where you influenced the work of others, directly or indirectly
• Demonstrable impact raising the bar for design practices and output
• Mostly in-house experience on direct-to-consumer products
• Experience in a high-velocity, experiment-driven environment, ideally growth product/design
• Experience on high-consideration consumer flows and launching 0-1 products
• Ability to explain design decisions clearly, with intentionality and rigorous thinking
• Strong portfolio showing interaction detail, storytelling, visual polish and content design
• Experience leading projects end-to-end, from discovery and validation through engineering implementation and measurement
• Ability to spot process and alignment issues quickly and fix them
• Preference for Eastern Time Zone
