Principal Laser Engineer

About the role

Alcon is seeking a Principal Laser Engineer to lead the development of innovative ophthalmic laser devices in Lake Forest, CA. You will drive cutting‑edge research, development, and up‑scaling of laser systems that improve patient outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design and development of complex laser systems, including solid‑state, fiber‑based, and semiconductor architectures, with a focus on manufacturability and reliability.
• Drive innovation in ultrafast laser and nonlinear optical system design.
• Model laser cavities, assess stability, and analyze dynamic behavior.
• Facilitate cross‑functional design reviews and trade‑off analyses.
• Develop detailed development plans, track progress, and apply phased‑gate and design‑control methodologies.
• Serve as subject‑matter expert, mentor peers, and provide technical guidance.
• Support intellectual property matters and stay current on laser/photonics market trends.
• Integrate laser‑tissue interaction knowledge into product designs and contribute to fiber‑optic energy delivery components.
• Ensure compliance with GxP regulations, SOPs, and internal quality standards.

Required profile

• Deep expertise in laser systems engineering, integration, and testing.
• Self‑starter with a passion for innovation and continuous learning.
• Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, multidisciplinary environment.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience (e.g., high school + 13 years, Associate + 9 years).
