Postdoctoral Associate in Physical Oceanography

About the role

The Department of Ocean Sciences at the University of Miami seeks a creative and motivated physical oceanographer to join a collaborative research effort on large‑scale circulation of the North Atlantic Ocean. The position will focus on the RAPID‑MOCHA and OSNAP observational arrays and can be tailored to the candidate’s interests.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct research on AMOC latitudinal connectivity, coherence mechanisms, and boundary current structures using numerical models and observational data.
• Develop novel methodologies to reconstruct boundary current velocities from SWOT satellite altimetry, potentially incorporating machine learning techniques.
• Prepare research reports, technical papers, and present findings at scientific meetings.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences, or a closely related field (conferred by start date).
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills with demonstrated interest in large‑scale ocean circulation or climate dynamics.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi‑institutional team.

Required skills

• Experience with numerical ocean models.
• Experience with in situ mooring observations and oceanographic data analysis.
• Experience with satellite altimetry, including SWOT swath data.
• Familiarity with machine learning or AI techniques applied to geophysical data.
• Knowledge of AMOC observing systems such as RAPID, MOCHA, OSNAP, or MOVE arrays.
