Part-Time Parks Maintenance Technician

About the role

The Parks Maintenance Technician works part‑time to keep South Padre Island’s parks safe, functional, and attractive. This role blends routine equipment upkeep, landscaping, and minor construction tasks in a hands‑on outdoor environment.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect and repair playground equipment to ensure safety and proper operation.
• Clean and maintain park restroom facilities.
• Maintain irrigation systems, including PVC pipe fittings, drip lines, and sprinkler components.
• Perform landscaping duties such as planting, transplanting, watering, pruning, and selecting vegetation.
• Mow, weed‑eat, and collect trash across park grounds.
• Paint, apply rust protection, and maintain signs and other park structures.
• Clean, check, and store tools and equipment after each use.
• Drive trucks of various sizes to transport gravel, sand, and equipment.
• Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned machinery.
• Operate power construction equipment, front‑end loaders, and tractors as needed.
• Assist with street and drainage system inspections, sign installation, and minor electrical repairs.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least three years of experience in park, grounds, or related maintenance work.
• Ability to work safely outdoors and follow city purchasing policies.

Required skills

• Operation of power construction and maintenance equipment.
• Use of front‑end loaders and tractors.
• Irrigation system maintenance (PVC, drip lines, sprinklers).
• Minor electrical repairs (plug and outlet replacement).
• Truck driving for equipment and material transport.
• Landscaping techniques (planting, pruning, watering).
• Equipment cleaning and preventive maintenance.
