Outside Machinist

About the role

Saronic Technologies seeks an Outside Machinist to support the installation, alignment, testing and maintenance of maritime propulsion and auxiliary systems at its Franklin shipyard. The role combines mechanical aptitude with hands‑on work aloft and in confined spaces, ensuring all equipment meets strict safety and performance standards.

Key responsibilities

• Read and interpret blueprints, perform material take‑offs and mark reference points.
• Plan, install, align and repair pipe systems, propulsion plant machinery and auxiliary equipment such as generators, switchboards and pumps.
• Overhaul valves, turbines, heat exchangers and conduct lube‑oil flushing, hydrostatic testing and system grooming.
• Install mechanical components including anchor windlasses, hydraulic systems and support HVAC installations.
• Operate cutting, grinding, pipe‑cutting, threading and beveling machines; fabricate and assemble metal structures.
• Align and straighten parts using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, sledge hammers and presses.
• Weld, braze, solder or cement pipe joints and inspect all equipment daily.
• Follow shipyard safety policies, work on scaffolds or manlifts, and assist in training junior riggers.

Required profile

• Strong mechanical aptitude with high attention to detail.
• Ability to work aloft on scaffolds or manlifts and in confined spaces.
• Proficiency in reading and following technical drawings and specifications.
• Commitment to safety procedures and proper use of PPE.

• Precision measurement with micrometers and dial indicators
• Operation of machine tools (lathes, boring bars, milling machines)
