About the role

The California Department of Public Health is seeking a qualified Nurse Surveyor to conduct inspections, investigations, surveys and evaluations of health care facilities across the state. The role ensures compliance with state licensing requirements and federal regulations, supporting the department’s mission to protect public health.

Key responsibilities

• Perform on‑site inspections of hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies and other health care facilities.
• Investigate complaints, conduct surveys and evaluate compliance with California health codes and Medicare/Medicaid regulations.
• Prepare detailed reports and recommend corrective actions to facility administrators.
• Advise health care facility leaders and community agencies on licensing and certification processes.
• Collaborate with the Nurse Surveyor Supervisor II and other regulatory teams.
• Travel extensively throughout California to meet inspection schedules.

Required profile

• Current, unrestricted Registered Nursing (RN) license in California.
• Knowledge of state and federal health care regulations, including CDPH and CMS requirements.
• Strong analytical and investigative abilities.
• Excellent written communication for report preparation.
