Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant – Cardiovascular Surgery

About the role

Ochsner Health is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to serve as a first assist in cardiovascular surgery. The role works in a collaborative model with residents, fellows, attendings and staff, providing peri‑operative, hospital and outpatient care under the supervision of the Medical Director.

Key responsibilities

• Utilize approved medical practice processes to deliver patient care across the cardiovascular surgery continuum.
• Provide comprehensive care based on physical, psycho‑social and educational criteria, and develop patient and family education experiences.
• Maintain on‑call responsibilities, including up to five additional shifts per month, and meet facility call requirements.
• Adapt communication and procedural approaches to respect patient privacy and cultural backgrounds.
• Stay current with federal, state and local regulations, accreditation standards and department policies.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Nursing for NP role or Bachelor’s/Master’s in Physician Assistant studies for PA role.
• Current APRN license (NP) or PA license with NCCPA certification.
• RN First Assist (RNFA) certification, BCLS certification (all candidates) and ACLS certification (PA candidates).
• Eligibility for prescriptive authority in Louisiana.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and on‑call shifts.

Required skills

• Computer and software proficiency, including web‑based applications.
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• RN First Assist (RNFA) certification.
