About the role
The International Rescue Committee is seeking enthusiastic Peer Mentors to support its Newcomer Youth Summer Academy, a six‑week program that helps newly arrived immigrant youth succeed in New York City public schools. Mentors will work directly with a single classroom of students, assisting teachers and serving as positive role models.
Key responsibilities
- Assist classroom teachers in delivering academic, creative arts, physical education, and social‑emotional learning activities.
- Provide one‑on‑one and small‑group support to students throughout the day.
- Accompany students on Friday field trips and help ensure safety and engagement.
- Participate in all orientation and training sessions before the program starts.
- Be available for after‑school programming (Monday‑Thursday) until 5:00 pm when space permits.
Required profile
- Commitment to attend the full orientation (June 26 2026), training (June 29‑July 2 2026), and program dates (July 6‑August 14 2026).
- Ability to work three full days per week on the specified schedule (Mon‑Wed‑Fri or Tue‑Thu‑Fri).
- Strong interest in supporting refugee and immigrant youth.
- Must be present on‑site in New York City for the entire duration; no remote option.
