Network Systems Research Engineer (Level III/IV/Senior I)

About the role

The Network Systems Research Engineer supports basic and applied research on next‑generation networks and networked applications. Working under general direction, the engineer designs, implements, and tests innovative solutions to emerging networking challenges for the Center for Applied Communications and Networks.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and evaluate research proposals, including technical approaches, equipment, protocols, and tools.
• Create network designs, standards, and documentation for new or upgraded research networks.
• Collaborate with researchers, system administrators, contractors, and vendors to define specifications and requirements.
• Act as subject‑matter expert on research projects, providing technical guidance and troubleshooting.
• Design and recommend security measures for research network systems.

Required profile

• Under general direction, responsible for conducting and supporting network research.
• Experience in designing, implementing, and testing network solutions.
• Ability to produce technical documentation and network designs.
• Strong analytical skills for evaluating technical approaches.
