Motor Vehicle Operator

About the role

Elmhurst Hospital Center is seeking a Motor Vehicle Operator to safely transport staff, patients, equipment and supplies across its 545‑bed campus in Queens, New York. Working under supervision, the operator will drive a variety of vehicles ranging from passenger cars to shuttle buses, trucks and forklifts.

Key responsibilities

• Operate passenger cars, shuttle buses, vans, trucks, forklifts and tractor‑trailer trucks as assigned.
• Transport employees, patients, equipment, and materials between hospital locations and external sites.
• Perform pre‑trip inspections, check tires, oil, fuel, lights, horn and brakes, and replenish fluids.
• Report mechanical defects, clean vehicle interiors and exteriors, and conduct basic maintenance such as tire changes.
• Assist with loading and unloading of cargo and passengers.
• Prepare trip reports and, when working in a garage/fleet, may dispatch vehicles and personnel.
• Report any accidents or incidents promptly.

Required profile

• Valid New York State motor vehicle driver’s license; for certain vehicles a Class A, B or C Commercial Driver License with passenger endorsement and no air‑brake restriction.
• Willingness to undergo pre‑employment and random drug/alcohol testing.
• Ability to follow safety procedures and traffic regulations.

Required skills

• Operation of various motor vehicles (cars, buses, trucks, forklifts, tractor‑trailers).
• Vehicle inspection and basic maintenance.
