Mechanical Engineering Internship – Summer 2027

About the role

Shield AI is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern for its Summer 2027 program. You will join the mechanical engineering team that designs and develops test equipment for autonomous UAVs, contributing to real projects that support defense‑tech operations.

Key responsibilities

• Gather requirements, design, and validate test stands for X‑BAT and V‑BAT components.
• Create tooling to secure devices‑under‑test during environmental testing.
• Design fixtures that interface with engines, electric motors, circuit boards, and other aeronautical parts.
• Specify facility needs such as electrical and plumbing for test chambers.
• Participate in cross‑functional design reviews and propose design improvements.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or PhD program in Mechanical Engineering or a related STEM field.
• Strong grasp of core engineering concepts (electrical, mechanical, programming, physics, mathematics).
• Experience on multidisciplinary hardware projects through internships, clubs, or personal work.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and a proven record of ownership and results.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, NX, or CATIA.
• Ability to rapidly manufacture designs in a machine shop.
• Experience with internal combustion engine design, tuning, or assembly.
• Familiarity with designing mechanical tooling or test fixtures.
