Mechanical Designer - Automation & Integration

About the role

As a Mechanical Designer within the Integration team at Applied Controls, you will design and develop custom automation systems, translating customer requirements and site conditions into fully engineered solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Develop 3D models and detailed fabrication drawings for automation equipment, tooling, fixtures, and structural assemblies using SolidWorks or equivalent CAD tools.
• Design components with attention to manufacturability, cost, durability and apply GD&T to ensure production‑ready documentation.
• Create and maintain bills of materials to support sourcing and procurement.
• Perform engineering analysis such as FEA or hand calculations to validate structural integrity and safety factors.
• Develop full system and cell layouts, considering equipment footprint, operator interaction, maintenance access and safety requirements.
• Define tooling interfaces, mounting schemes and change‑over strategies, and collaborate with controls and electrical teams on cable, pneumatic and sensor routing.
• Present design concepts to internal stakeholders and customers, incorporate feedback and deliver complete documentation packages for project handoff.
• Contribute to reusable design standards, libraries and continuous‑improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• 3–5 years of mechanical design experience in automation, equipment design or custom manufacturing environments.
• Proven track record of taking designs from concept through fabrication, assembly and installation.
• Experience designing tooling, fixtures or custom mechanical systems; experience in regulated or high‑compliance industries is a plus.
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design or equivalent.

Required skills

• SolidWorks (CAD certification preferred) and familiarity with AutoCAD or similar CAD software.
• Strong knowledge of GD&T and production‑ready drawing creation.
• Experience with sheet metal, machining, welding and additive manufacturing processes.
• Ability to perform FEA or hand calculations for structural analysis.
• System layout design, cable management, pneumatic routing and integration of off‑the‑shelf components.
• Understanding of applicable safety standards such as ANSI, ISO and OSHA.
• Use of simulation or layout validation tools.
