Maintenance Technician – Public Works

About the role

The Maintenance Technician supports the Public Works department by performing semi‑skilled maintenance, repair, and construction tasks on streets, drainage systems, and related infrastructure across South Padre Island.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, and maintain streets, storm drainage facilities, and signage.
• Operate trucks, front‑end loaders, tractors, and other construction equipment for hauling materials and performing field work.
• Conduct routine preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and report defects.
• Perform crew‑based tasks such as pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole cleaning, pipe repair, and backfilling.
• Maintain public areas by cleaning streets, beaches, restrooms, and trash removal.
• Provide landscape maintenance, mowing, and weed control for assigned zones.
• Assist with traffic control setup, beach barrier installation, and minor electrical repairs.
• Support city purchasing policies when handling procurement tasks.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least one year of related maintenance or construction experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid state driver’s license; CDL preferred.
• Bilingual ability in Spanish and English is preferred.

Required skills

• Operation of front‑end loaders.
• Operation of tractors and related equipment.
• Minor electrical work (plug and outlet replacement).
• General equipment maintenance and cleaning.
