Life Sciences Counsel

About the role

Anthropic is seeking its first dedicated Life Sciences Counsel to partner with researchers advancing AI‑driven biomedical discovery. The lawyer will provide trusted legal guidance on high‑velocity life‑science transactions and regulatory challenges.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as a strategic advisor to life‑science research teams on complex research, development, and commercial matters worldwide.
• Drive a high volume of deals with life‑science and biopharma counterparties across sophisticated agreement types.
• Identify, analyze, and proactively manage life‑science regulatory risks in coordination with the broader Legal department.
• Design and implement scalable guidance and processes to support fast‑growing life‑science initiatives.
• Anticipate emerging legal developments affecting AI technologies in the life‑science and biopharma space and advise leadership.

Required profile

• JD and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (California or New York preferred).
• Deep fluency in how the life‑sciences industry works, including drug development and biotech partnership dynamics.
• Working knowledge of relevant regulatory environments (GxP, clinical and health data regulations, human‑subjects research, FDA processes).
• Extensive experience negotiating and drafting complex IP allocation issues in multi‑party research arrangements.
• Excellent communication skills to translate legal risk into practical guidance for scientists and business partners.
• Experience managing outside counsel across specialties (FDA/regulatory, IP, privacy, export control) with focus on depth and cost efficiency.
• Highly collaborative, low‑ego, high‑empathy disposition with a "doer" attitude.
