Juvenile Correctional Sergeant – Gainesville RYDC

About the role

Join the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice as a Juvenile Correctional Sergeant at the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center. In this position you will help create a safe, therapeutic environment for detained youth while supporting their rehabilitation.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain custody, security, and care of youth in accordance with department policies and standard operating procedures.
• Provide direct support, guidance, and structure to promote pro‑social behavior and personal development.
• Complete administrative paperwork, maintain records, and prepare reports.
• Inspect, inventory, and control security equipment and technology used in the facility.
• Intervene with youth to maintain order, discipline, and a secure environment.
• Assist in training, selecting, and orienting subordinate correctional staff.
• Review youth information to identify special‑attention cases and oversee officer performance.

Required profile

• High school diploma/GED and at least six months experience as a Juvenile Correctional Officer 3 (or equivalent).
• Successful completion of Leadership Core Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced within the first six months, or four years of military experience.
• State of Georgia P.O.S.T. certification obtained and maintained within six months of hire.
• Ability to meet agency physical‑agility standards and pass required assessments.
• Pass a reference and criminal background check.
