IP Counsel – Patent Strategy

About the role

Anthropic is seeking an experienced IP Counsel to lead its patent strategy and support the growth of its organic patent portfolio. The role works closely with product, research, and technical teams to provide comprehensive IP guidance while aligning with the company’s mission to build safe and beneficial AI.

Key responsibilities

• Support the organic patent development process, including invention harvesting, drafting oversight, prosecution management, and coordination with outside counsel.
• Partner in creating and executing U.S. and international patent strategies that match business objectives and the technology roadmap.
• Provide broad IP advice across patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and open‑source matters.
• Analyze and respond to third‑party patent demands and evaluate strategic acquisition and licensing opportunities.
• Conduct IP due diligence for M&A transactions and strategic partnerships.
• Advise on IP aspects of commercial agreements, such as licenses, joint development agreements, and technology transfers, and educate technical teams on best practices.

Required profile

• J.D. and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
• Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
• Substantial patent experience, including invention harvesting, prosecution, and portfolio development.
• Working knowledge of trademarks, trade secrets, and open‑source IP.
• Proven ability to collaborate directly with engineers, researchers, or product teams and explain IP concepts clearly.
• Experience shaping IP strategies in fast‑moving technical environments.
