Immigration Intern (Fall 2026) – Unpaid

About the role

The International Rescue Committee is seeking an Immigration Intern for the Fall 2026 term. This unpaid position will support the immigration team in assisting refugees and other clients with a variety of immigration applications and documentation. The role offers hands‑on experience in a humanitarian non‑profit environment.

Key responsibilities

• Attend the volunteer/intern orientation and complete required training.
• Draft USCIS forms such as green card, naturalization, family reunification, and travel document applications.
• Maintain and organize client immigration files, track case status with USCIS, and record hours in the IRC Volunteer Dashboard.
• Communicate with clients to gather information and keep the immigration caseworker informed of schedule changes.
• Prepare invitation letters and other correspondence for IRC clients.
• Perform clerical tasks including copying, filing, and record‑keeping while adhering to confidentiality policies.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program; JD candidates are preferred.
• Willingness to work onsite at the Charlottesville, VA office.
• Excellent written and spoken English; bilingual ability is a plus.
• Strong attention to detail, timeliness, and ability to follow IRC policies.
• Commitment to supporting refugees and learning about diverse global backgrounds.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word.
• Experience using immigration case‑tracking software or similar database tools.
