Heavy Equipment Mechanic

About the role

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic maintains and repairs the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority’s fleet of trucks, vehicles, and ground transportation equipment at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) or Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). This journey‑level position involves troubleshooting, overhauling, and performing preventive maintenance on a wide range of mobile and stationary equipment.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose, repair, and overhaul diesel, multi‑fuel, and gasoline engines, automatic and manual transmissions, hydraulic and HVAC systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance, oil changes, filter replacements, major tune‑ups, and inspections on vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Test‑drive equipment, make service calls, conduct on‑site repairs, and operate a wrecker when needed.
• Enter work orders into the computerized maintenance management system and track labor, parts, and material requirements.
• May fabricate parts, perform minor bodywork, welding, and cutting as required.

Required profile

• Four years of progressive experience or approved apprenticeship in heavy mobile equipment repair, including mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
• Journey‑level knowledge of heavy industrial, commercial, and light automotive equipment.
• Ability to read diagrams and schematics, work safely, and communicate effectively.
• Valid state driver’s license; Class B or Class A CDL with required endorsements within 90 days of hire.
