Health Statistician – Federal Position

About the role

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is seeking a Statistician (Health) to lead statistical studies that address complex health issues, with a focus on mental health and substance‑use prevalence, surveillance, and treatment utilization. This onsite position in Rockville, MD, requires U.S. citizenship and offers the opportunity to contribute to national public‑health research.

Key responsibilities

• Independently plan, execute, and manage statistical studies on mental health and substance‑use topics.
• Define research questions, select appropriate databases, and conduct analytic research projects.
• Apply advanced statistical methods such as logistic regression, survival models, complex sampling designs, and analysis of variance to public‑health data.
• Interpret results, prepare technical reports, and communicate findings to stakeholders.

Required profile

• U.S. citizenship.
• Bachelor’s degree with at least 15 semester hours in statistics (or mathematics & statistics) and additional coursework in a related scientific or social‑science field.
• One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑09 level, including full‑range professional statistical work (sampling, data collection, analysis, and application of statistical techniques).
