Handbag Designer – New York City

About the role

Steve Madden International Handbags is seeking a passionate, trend‑driven Handbag Designer to join its fast‑paced design team in New York City. You will own the full design cycle—from market research and concept development to sample creation—ensuring each collection reflects the brand’s energy and resonates with a global audience.

Key responsibilities

• Research global and domestic markets, visit key retail destinations, and monitor consumer trends.
• Conceptualize and design handbag collections that align with brand DNA, price points, and target customers.
• Source, select, and develop materials such as leathers, fabrics, and trims.
• Create, review, and present samples, maintaining design integrity throughout development.
• Attend industry trade shows and market appointments to stay ahead of trends.
• Collaborate cross‑functionally with merchandising, development, and production teams.
• Support special projects and seasonal initiatives as needed.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills with confident presentation ability.
• Highly conceptual thinker who can plan, execute, and solve problems independently.
• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to handle confidential information.
• Proactive problem‑solver who can anticipate challenges and develop solutions with limited supervision.
• Ability to guide and support junior team members or interns.
• Adaptable, collaborative, and energized by a fast‑moving creative environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• CAD experience (strongly preferred)

• Base salary range of $80,000 – $85,000 per year.
